The Consumer Protection Act, 1986 was enacted by the Government of India for protecting the basic rights of the consumers. The Central Consumer Protection Council has been formed according to the provision of this act and the stated council shall be held responsible for protecting the basic rights of the consumers. Here, it is required to be stated that the act provides six basic rights to the consumers, and these rights are:-
- The right of the consumers to be protected against any marketing of goods, which are hazardous to life and property
- The consumers are having the right to know the quality, quantity, price, purity standard and the potency of any product or goods and this right is to protect the consumers against unfair trade practice
- The right to be assured to the consumers to have access to a variety of goods and services at competitive prices
- The consumers will have the right to be heard and to be assured that consumers' interests will receive due consideration at appropriate prices
- The consumers will have the right to seek redressal of their complaints regarding unfair trade practices or restrictive trade practices or any other trade practices that cause exploitation of the consumers
- The consumers will have the right to have consumer education
